Sterile water, also known as sterile water for injection (SWFI), is a clear and colorless solution used in medical procedures. This sterile fluid can be used to wash tissues and equipment before an operation, or it can be injected into a patient’s bloodstream to reduce swelling it gets rid of excess fluids from around swollen tissue without absorbing those swollen areas. Sterile Water vs Normal Saline Other intravenous solutions include normal saline and dextrose injection; saline solution is salt-and-mineral rich while dextrose consists entirely of sugar.

Uses
Sterile water is a commonly used intravenous medication that comes in ampules that typically hold 500 milliliters of liquid each. Hospitals will often use these ampules to cleanse equipment after it has been stored between uses. But, if a doctor needs injectable fluids during surgery—in addition to saline solutions—sterile water might be one of their choices because its properties make it better than plain tap water.

Manufacturing Process:
The manufacturing process of sterile water includes two basic steps: sterilization and filtration. To ensure purity, both steps must be completed by experienced and licensed professionals using state-of-the-art technology to prevent contamination of equipment or unsterilized product. During step one, medical grade water is filtered through a five-stage reverse osmosis process. If a seven-stage system is used, then an additional step of ozone disinfection takes place.

Afterward, filters are sterilized in an autoclave before being used again during step two. The second step uses ultraviolet radiation combined with high temperatures to destroy any remaining bacteria left after filtering. The UV rays hit each part of a filter at different times so there’s no risk of germs becoming resistant to UV light. And because each filter is individually treated, sterility isn’t compromised when parts need replacing—no new filters have to be manufactured from scratch just for those occasions.
